Limited July 15, 2010 J. Hesse (Texas) I live about 37 miles from the city. I have a 30 year old set of rabbit ears that I've been using and I (amazingly) get about 85% of the channels in our area using the rabbit ears and an amplifier. I figured that surely now they make better antennas then they did back then so I tried this one. First of all I should mention that the box had a diagram that rates the antenna on reception capabilities and this antenna is only rated at about mid range capability. I think it was rated "good"...when "exceptional" is best...which makes it about a 3/5. That being said, that's about the quality of results I got. I didn't receive as many channels as I do with the $5 rabbit ears (maybe 40% of them)...even after moving the antenna around to every location possible and trying it with an amplifier. This antenna has an interesting look and would be easy to mount behind a tv, but if you live more than 20 miles away from the tv towers or have any kind of interferance in your area, there's a pretty good chance it won't do much for you.
worst antenna ever July 11, 2010 Zitas human This is the most worthless product I have ever bought!!! I get better reception with old style rabbit ears. I can't wait to get to a shooting range and give this product the proper send-off it so deserves. Do not waste your money.
No More Cable Bills July 9, 2010 Clairetta Anderson (Mounds View, MN.) I already have one of these antennas so I knew it pulls signals really well with our digital converter box. So I ordered this for my husband. Before, he was always complaining about not being able to get certain channels and choppy reception. Since he got this one, he no longer complains and is very happy he can get all the channels in now.
Due to it's flat design, it isn't so obvious wherever it is stationed. You can hang it on your wall or set it on something. Mine is on the other rabbit ear antenna that is on the top of our entertainment center.
There are times when we have choppy reception on some channels, but that is because of the towers positioning or weather. Although, even in the worst thunderstorms, I still have had excellent reception.
I, highly, recommend this antenna for you who want decent TV reception at a very reasonable price.
A Simple Antenna that Really Works June 14, 2010 solo (canada) It was my first foray into realm of HD antennas and had 4 qualifications for the device: (1) I wanted a small antenna that could be hidden and not look ugly like my Dad's 'rabbit ear' antenna, (2) to be affordable, (3) to be of good quality from a reputable company and, of course, (4) to work. The RCA 1050 met all these qualifiers. Now within each of these 4 qualifiers, I have sub-qualifiers. For instance, for qualifier 1 it could be argued that a piece of plastic, that hangs on the wall, looking like a bat ready to launch itself into the airspace that is my room, could be considered an eyesore. I argue it still beats the 'rabbit ears.' So qualifier 1 is subjective and only you know if the design will work for you. I have heard of customers hanging it or even electrical taping it to the back of their television set. The RCA ant1050 is composed of 4 basic parts: 2 wings, a linear and a 'base' unit. The base unit once disassembled (yes, you must dissemble it first) and reassembled after attaching the other parts has a little notch in the back to aid in hanging your 'bat' antenna. The ant1050 is the most affordable HD antenna that RCA offers next to the budget line ant1000. It isn't omnidirectional, so you may have to adjust it's position to obtain best reception. I'm able to get all, but one channel in the position I've hung it. Don't give up if you don't find the right spot, to get the best reception, right away. Try to adjust it's height and direction, but I don't recommend a vertical (up/down) orientation. I have heard of customers laying it flat and getting reception (this is good to 'hide' your bat. I rotated the orientation 90 degree horizontal, to pick up the channel that refused to 'come in.' The 3rd qualifier, quality, passed my grade too. RCA is a company I trust as they have been making quality products for a time longer than I born and set a certain standard in that area. RCA is particularly adept as manufacturing these niche products (accessories). You might be amazed at what RCA manufactures beyond television sets. The material aren't outstanding, but acceptable. For instance, I didn't like the coxial connector. I prefer a connector that you just push in the tv jack rather than frustratingly screw it in. Granted, screw in makes a tighter, more secure connection. Also, the cable length is limited, so I couldn't tape the antenna to my bedroom window as suggested in the instructions. My last qualifier was not satisfied at first. I just about returned this thing for the more expensive 'omni-directions' antennae. But, by fiddling around, I found the correct orientation to get optimal reception. See my suggestion above to aid in this respect. It is helpful to find out what direction you area's antenna array is located at and mount you ant1050 90 degree from that. For instance if your station antenna is north of your abode, mount your antenna flat on the wall facing east or west. Hope this review helps. The antenna does work, so give it a try. Simply return it, if it doesn't meet your 'qualifiers.'
You get what you pay for! April 9, 2010 OOVigilante (Cape Cod) Bought this on impulse at WalMart. Though it doen't take long, it's not that easy to assemble. The cable it comes with simply isn't long enough to position it where you may need it to improve your signal. I'll keep trying, but the whole idea was to save money on HD, not have to fuss with something that may need more equipment to work. I got a few signals out of the box, but not enough to watch them.
