3 out of 5 stars ANT2000 is an acceptable, but not a perfect, solution   July 13, 2009

In the aftermath of the true digital TV changeover in June 2009, my "amplified" rabbit ears did not perform as well as it did in the few months prior when I bought and installed my RCA D-A TV converter box in January 2009. It was occasionally quirky, but I could at least get all the stations I wanted to watch, albeit with having to frequently reposition the antenna depending on the station. But video and audio was spectacularly clear compared to "normal" OTA broadcasts.

I am about 40 miles line of sight east from the Mt Wilson transmitter farm in the Los Angeles basin and really don't want to install a rooftop antenna if at all avoidable. Several of the stations I should have been able to receive could no longer be located/pulled in and a number of those that could be found would not air, so I read dozens of reviews of various indoor antenna solutions and decided to give the ANT2000 a try.

My TV/antenna location is on the West wall of the house (single story) facing in the general direction of the bulk of the LA transmitter towers.
Claims are that the so-called "smart" antenna does a superior job of picking up stations regardless of the antenna orientation (flat or vertical), and in spite of location. I did not find this to be true in my case.

On first attempt, I laid the antenna horizontal on top of my TC where the old rabbit ears had been. Did a "full" scan for stations and the antenna found only 36 of the 51 I had previously been aware of. Did not find 9.1 or 11.1, both of which I wanted.

Attempt #2 was with the antenna positioned vertically with its back to the wall behind the TV and about 3 feet above (about 6 feet from the floor). Full scan revealed 46 stations, but did not locate the 7s, 9.1, or 11.1, and missed some of the UHF previously found in the first scan.

Repositioned the antenna vertically in a window about 4 feet away with the antenna back to the window and about one foot lower than the set top for attempt #3. Did another a full scan, and the antenna/converter located 55 channels. But several of those (including 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3 (ABC) do not resolve properly -- highly pixelated image/broken audio -- even though the antenna strength meter reads 40%+ (by comparison, 2.1 comes in perfectly at 13%). A number of the UHF stations were "located" but also do not resolve -- no/occasional image/audio -- but this is not entirely a problem since those channels are foreign language stations (Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Armenian) that I an not likely to watch.

Tried a fourth scan with the antenna in the same orientation, but at the top of the window (about 3.5" above the prior position) instead. Found 50 stations. Still no luck with 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, but at least found 9.1 and 11.1. And this was still a few stations less than I knew existed.

Tried scan #5 with the front of the antenna facing the window but back at the bottom, resting on the sill (24" above the floor). Full scan located 61 channels! But only about 45-50 actually resolve 100% of the time. Still have no usable image/audio on the 7s even though antenna strength is in the 40%+ range. A few UHF stations seen at night are not seen during the daylight hours.

This final resting place seems to be the best for my location. I cannot figure out the reason for very good signal strength on the 7s but no good video/audio (about the only thing on ABC I really watch is Funniest Home Videos and Jimmy Kimmel, both of which I won't miss too much). Rotationally changing the antenna location/orientation does not help. Most other VHF-UHF stations resolve 95%-100% of the time day or night with signal strengths between 13% and 49%. Some stations are better received during daylight than at night.

So I'm going to rate this antenna as a 3.75. A lot better than what I had before, but by no means perfect, and certainly not "superior" as the manufacturer's claims. My understanding of so-called "smart" antennas is that the antenna is "360 degrees" and supposed to determine the best path to the signal regardless of orientation. But my several trials definitely indicate that signal acquisition is dependent primarily on the the antenna position, location, and orientation (and "full scans" [15+ minutes] definitely found more stations than "quick scans" [5+ minutes] did). Which is precisely what I was hoping to avoid. Window placement is better than against a wall filled with insulation and covered with stucco on the outside. But, contrary to the directions, lower placement seems to be better than higher, at least in my trials.

I'll keep it for now, but may try one or two other indoor antennas in the future, resisting an outdoor antenna as long as possible. But is certainly seems that this new-fangled digital TV is as hit-and-miss as the difference between a digital ZERO and a digital ONE.

Don't pay full price ($99) for this antenna. Buy one of the "factory reconditioned" ones for half price, which is what I did. But don't set your expectations too optimistically high.

This is the worst antenna i have gotten. It doesnt do anything, also it sound like when i pick it up that something is loose inside like its broken. But i wouldnt recommend it for anyone to buy this. too bad i cant send my back to amazon just to tell Amazon its not your fault for the item not working. Its RCA they need to make a better one. oh, its not smart at all.

ON THOSE CHANELS STILL OPERATING IN THE LOW END OF THE TV FREQUENCY IT WORKS GREAT. BUT THOSE IN THE UHF END ARE SOME WHAT USABLE AS THEY ARE AFFECTED BY THE GEOGRAPHIC TARAIN (MOUNTAINS AND THE LIKE). WILL HAVE TO SEE WHAT THE STATIONS DO TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS (GIVE ME BACK THE ANALOG SIGNALS)

Antenna has to be constantly moved to get proper reception of digital broadcast channels. Because of its design it looks like a huge square plate that sits on the couch for one channel and has to be moved to the sink to get another channel. get an antenna that can be adjusted without moving it all over the room. 5 out of 5 stars RCA ANT2000 Smart Antenna Is Excellent For Digital TV   June 8, 2009

I live in a multi-story building about 25 miles northwest of Chicago. Before purchasing this antenna, I could only get about 4 or 5 stations with my amplified rabbit ears. Now I can get 30 stations - all DVD quality! I just hooked it up to my Tivax STB-T8 converter box, did a full scan, and found about 20 stations. Then, I moved it toward a window to see if I could pick up any additional stations with weaker signals. Sure enough, I got 10 more when I did a scan for additional stations. The only station that I can't get is channel 2 (WBBM - CBS), which is notorious for its weak signal. Hopefully, when it increases its signal strength on June 12th, I'll be able to get that station as well. The "smart" and "omni-directional" features on this antenna are really nice: No more fooling around with rabbit ears!
