Amazon.com Product Description The high-performance HDTVa amplified indoor HDTV antenna from Terk Technologies is designed to capture both UHF and VHF signals (channels 2 to 69) while extending the reception range for all local HDTV broadcasts. The HDTVa uses an ultra-low-noise, high-gain amplifier with Terk's exclusive Dual-Drive Amplifier technology for clear reception of both distant and close HDTV and DTV stations. As suitable for those living in city apartments as for those in suburban homes, the compact HDTVa lets viewers experience HDTV broadcasts in full resolution. Designed for total reception versatility, the HDTVa's high-gain antenna array can be oriented either horizontally or vertically within its mounting base to achieve optimum capture of off-air broadcasts. Set the amplifier to high-gain mode to compensate for signals that are too weak or might otherwise be bypassed for a stronger signals nearby. Simplifying your installation, the HDTVa uses Terk's Power Injector to derive power via its coaxial connecting cable. The result? One cable is all you have to connect, making it easy to install the HDTVa atop or near your television. The antenna is engineered to receive all local HDTV channels, with an operating bandwidth covering both the UHF (channels 2 to 13) and VHF (channels 14 to 69) frequency ranges. Its highly directional log periodic UHF and precision VHF elements are designed to receive HDTV broadcasts with maximum signal strength while rejecting all or most interference. The HDTVa is as exceptional in appearance as it is in performance: its curved, tapering, polished-aluminum antenna elements are mounted in a slim base with a contoured front that visually complements the curve of the antenna elements. Did not live up to other reviewers ratings March 9, 2010 Nathan Chao (NJ) I bought this last month after I discontinued my cable service. I was picking up about 25 stations with my old unamplified ordinnary analog indoor tv antenna. After I hooked up the Terk, I gained 4 more stations all in channels above 13 and foreign language which I do not watch. However for the lower channels, it performed the same as my old rabbit ears. The signals on channels 2 and 4 still breaks up in bad weather and greatly annoyed me during important moments in the winter olympic viewing last month.
For all that money compared to unamplified antennas, it was a great disappointment.
Unable to pick up almost half of Los Angeles OTA stations March 8, 2010 B. Stone Very disappointed. Was unable to pick up 3 Los Angeles over the air stations 5, 11 and 13.
Most disappointing was inability to pick up local FOX TV station, channel 11 for Sunday afternoon NASCAR race on newly purchased big screen. Fiddled and diddled, daddled and doodled but was unable to get the stations to scan in.
Finally gave up and am returning to Amazon for refund.
Good deal March 7, 2010 David J. Liberto (Charlotte, NC USA) We spent a lot of time researching our options. We live in the Steele Creek area of Charlotte and were concerned about the reception due to our distance from the sources. We thought about the long range antennae for our roof, and we were willing to put in the time and labor to make sure it would be installed well. Yet, we wondered whether an indoor antenna would do just as well. From the research, the indoor options cost less, required less labor for installation, and had the convenience of easy manipulation for directing towards multiple signal sources.
After reading a number of reviews for the Terk HDTVa, we decided that we would try it out. So far, it's been great. We pulled the antenna out of the box, set it up on the mantle, wired it to the TV following the instructions, and immediately got all the major stations. We haven't even tried facing towards the northwest where there are more.
Sure beats paying a monthly service and it's perfect for our family needs.
Great indoor antenna for DTV March 6, 2010 Craigincal (Los Angeles, CA) I have tried a few different models since DTV rolled out, and this one is the best so far. I live about 26 miles from Mt Wilson on the west side of LA and I get 35 or 40 channels (but most of them are foreign language). I got basic cable as a backup, but may dump that soon because I don't really need it.
Now get more channels March 5, 2010 Acontius (Florida) I'm glad I bought this. I live in Gainesville, FL, and with this antenna I now get FOX and NBC, two of the big players in TV land. (This replaces an old rabbit-ears and loop antenna.)
Another benefit is that the other channels, which tended to break up, are now rock steady. Gotta love digital TV on a big screen HDTV!
At first I could not get NBC, so I read the tiny instruction booklet and took the suggestion to turn the blades 90 degrees. That did it. Also, I have found that during the day the antenna needs to be up a couple feet higher than at night.
The amplifier does make a difference when it is switched on. Without it, FOX and NBC break up or don't come in at all.
The only flaw is the base, which is not heavy enough, so the unit tips over way too easily. You can balance it by adusting the rabbit ears, but a little extra weight in the base would have made it more stable.
Like so many others, I am sick to death of paying cable companies who don't give a damn about how many commercials and infomercials and endlessly repeating movies they pass off to us. Complain to the cable company, and they say, "We have no control over the content." That is bull. The cable networks need the cable companies, and the cable companies could put pressure on them to cut down on the commercials and the infomercials and stop looping movies all day and all weekend.
The only way the cable companies will fight for us is if enough of us abandon them until they do pressure the networks.
Yes, there are way too many commercials on broadcast too, but I am not paying to watch them! So now I get my news, some sports, a few big event programs, and I'm not paying a big monthly bill. Movies? Rent 'em.
